The Thyme-Saving Hack Every Lazy Gardener Needs to Know

Harvesting your own herbs makes you feel like an absolute gardening expert until you actually have to sit down and process them.

On Saturday, I harvested a beautiful batch of fresh thyme. I delicately washed the sprigs in cold water, ignored my dehydrator, and laid them out on cooling racks and paper towels. Three days of air-drying later, they were quite crisp.

The grand plan today was to efficiently slide those leaves off the stems like a gourmet chef.

The reality? It was tedious, boring, and testing the absolute limits of what little dose of today’s patience remained.

First, I tried chopping the stems and leaves together on a cutting board. It beat plucking them one by one, but it still felt like dial-up internet speed. Then, pure laziness inspired a stroke of genius. I shoved the whole mess into my coffee grinder and prayed for the best. I told myself if it didn’t work out, there was still some more thyme growing and I could try again another day!

Guess what? It worked like a charm.

Now, the result wasn’t quite as flawless and pretty as what you buy in the store because of those ground-up stems. But the aroma? Unbelievable. It smelled amazing, and honestly, I felt so good just knowing I grew and processed it myself without any chemicals. I wasted way too much time playing around with “proper” methods when a more excellent, effortless way was sitting right on my counter.

Sometimes, the blessings in our gardens aren’t just the things we grow, but the clever little ways we find grace in the process.

If you’re looking for permission to stop meticulously plucking your dried herbs, this is your sign. Dust off that coffee grinder, save your sanity, and spend your time on something that actually deserves it. Life is entirely too short, and our days are entirely too full to spend them sweating over things that can be handled with a little creativity and a quick pulse button.

Naturally. Creatively. Delicious. Work smarter, grow deeper, and count every single blessing.
